Finding enough slide rule pins and tie clips for all the thousands of slide-rule-obsessed people that want them has proven to be JUST PLAIN IMPOSSIBLE, so we decided to quit fooling around, and GO MAKE THEM. This of course required that we first design them (no trivial task), and then find a small foundry to manufacture them. The full, thundering power of man's most incredible design technology (the pencil and paper) allowed us to quickly define our plans.

Larry Stewart (one of Canada's award-winning commercial artists) and I (WS2) pondered long and hard, and in about 2 weeks of intensive blue-skying and pencil sketching, followed by Photoshopping, arrived at the pin design you see at the top of the page. It blends together a faithful (if incredibly miniaturized) reproduction of the Hemmi/Post Versalog, a small, portable slice of the universe, and a brief summary of something you should always remember, which explains the appeal of slide rules perfectly:

The design was costed out, colors and techniques selected, and a small and very clever pin making company in Quebec (more ingenious Canadians) figured out how to make the highly detailed pin, and also convert it into a tie clip for the throat choker fans.

All items are ready to ship from stock. Real photos are now shown so you can see the finished pin/clip details as well as the original art.

Our site cartoons and the pin were drawn by Larry Stewart, another slide rule fanatic in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada, you know, the True North, Strong and Free... where we are also located, incidentally, but on the west coast, in British Columbia). Using a combination of deftly applied pencils and the magic of computer graphics, he whipped up the design for the new slide rule pins.

Larry also just won an Aurora Award for artistic achievement (the Canadian equivalent of the Hugo) for his recent illustration work in TRIFOLIUM BOOKS, by Julie Czerneda. Need some incredible original artwork for something YOU are doing?
